Il sorriso è quello di chi sa di essere di fronte ad un viaggio, per certi versi, inaspettato. Lynx Hawthorne, giunto al “Guelfi Sport Center” già da qualche settimana è adesso pronto a presentarsi ai suoi nuovi fans, per i quali giocherà a due anni di distanza dall’ultima volta che ha indossato casco ed armatura per i Baylor Bears. Il nuovo quarterback degli Estra Guelfi Firenze è un giocatore molto versatile, in grado anche di ricoprire un buon numero di ruoli ed in viola ritroverà sia Coach Art Briles che il suo ex compagno di football collegiale Silas Nacita. Queste le prime dichiarazioni da guelfo del classe ’92.

In campo puoi essere impiegato praticamente ovunque e non solo in attacco. Cosa possiamo aspettarci da te?

“Credo che Coach Art Briles mi schiererà nel ruolo in cui potrò aiutare di più il resto della squadra. All’high school ero abituato a dare una mano ovunque e questo mi ha aiutato ad essere pronto a giocare in ogni posizione. Sicuramente verrò inserito in squadra come quarterback, ma resterò a disposizione anche per altri ruoli”.

Giocherai di nuovo con il tuo amico Silas. Raccontaci qualcosa su di lui:

“Silas ha giocato con continuità per tre anni in Germania e già ai tempi di Baylor era, come il sottoscritto, un jolly che poteva aiutare in tante posizioni. E’ molto bravo sia come punter che come ritornatore e ovviamente è un running back letale. Siamo entrambi molto eccitati dall’avere la chance di giocare ancora assieme. Quest’anno segneremo un sacco di punti (ride, ndr)”.

Dopo i tuoi anni al college non hai più giocato. Come ti sei tenuto in forma? Ti senti pronto per questa prima avventura in un Senior team?

“Nel 2017 e per la prima parte del 2018 me ne sono stato a Houston, dove ho aiutato molti ragazzi delle high school a prepararsi per giocare a football nelle università. Questo mi ha tenuto attivo e vicino al mondo del football americano. Negli ultimi mesi ho fatto praticamente la stessa cosa, spostandomi però in Colorado. Sono sicuro che Coach Briles mi abbia scelto anche perché sono rimasto a contatto con questo mondo e da quando ho ricevuto la sua chiamata ho intensificato la mia preparazione per farmi trovare pronto. Da un paio di mesi mi sento veramente in forma!”.

Gli Estra Guelfi Firenze sono alla ricerca della loro prima vittoria in una partita di play-off del Campionato Italiano Football Americano Prima Divisione. Ti sei dato un obiettivo per questo 2019?

“Io, Coach Art Briles e Silas Nacita non siamo venuti qui solo per passare del tempo e produrre dei risultati nella media. Siamo qui perché vogliamo vincere il titolo e nessuno accetterà un risultato diverso. Coach Art Briles è sempre stato in grado di far muovere tutto nella giusta direzione e sono sicuro che a Firenze non andrà diversamente”.

La scorsa domenica hai visto la U16 fiorentina laurearsi campione d’Italia. Che impressione ti sei fatto dei ragazzi allenati da Coach Guglielmo Perasole?

“Il giorno prima avevo già visto il Rose Bowl e la finale del Master. E’ stato davvero bello vedere i nostri ragazzi in campo e penso che qualcuno di loro ci darà una mano durante il campionato, rappresentando così una bella boccata di aria fresca. Alla fine la grande differenza fra i giocatori americani e quelli degli altri paesi è fatta proprio dal momento in cui iniziamo a giocare, io ho iniziato quando avevo 5 o 6 anni. Tanti dei ragazzi che sono diventati campioni d’Italia si allenano già da 3 o 4 stagioni e sono molto preparati. Atleti come Andrea Costanzi o Cosimo Casati sanno davvero il fatto loro e anche il QB (Marco Spinelli, ndr) ha dimostrato di avere un bel braccio e di saper leggere il gioco. Non vedo l’ora di essere in campo anche con loro”.

The smile of someone who knows a new adventure, somehow unexpected, lies ahead. Lynx Hawthorne, arrived at the “Guelfi Sport Center” already a few weeks ago, is now ready to introduce himself to his new fans, for whom he will play two years after he last wore helmet and shoulderpads for the Baylor Bears. The new quarterback for the Estra Guelfi Firenze is really versatile player, who can line up at different positions and within the Guelfi Firenze will reunite with Coach Art Briles and former teammate at Baylor Silas Nacita. These are the first words as a member of the Guelfi team of the 26 year old player.

On the field you can line up almost everywhere and not only on offese. What can we expect from you?

“I believe Coach Art Briles will use me in the position where I can help the team the most. At the high school level I have been used to help everywhere and thus I am confortable and ready playing every position. For sure I will start as quarterback, but I am available for other positions“.

You will play again with your friend Silas. Tell us something about him:

“Silas has been playing for 3 years in Germany, and since his time at Baylor he has been, like myself, a jolly who could play many different positions. He is very good as a punter and returner and obviously he is a lethal runningback. We are both really excited to have the chance to play together again. This year we will score lots of points (he laughs, ndr).”

After your college years you haven’t played. How did you stay in shape? Do you feel ready for this first adventure with a the Estra Guelfi Firenze Senior Team?

“In 2017 and for the first half of 2018 I was in Houston, and I’ve helped many High School players to prepare to play at the College level. This helped me to stay active and close to the world of American Football. In the last months I’ve done basically the same thing, but in Colorado. I am sure that Coach Briles has chosen me also because I’ve been in touch with this sport and since I have received his call I have intensified my preparation to be ready. I really feel in great shape right now!“

The Estra Guelfi Firenze team are still looking for your first play-offs win in the Italian First Division. What is your goal for this 2019?

“I, Coach Art Briles and Silas Nacita did not come here only to spend time and produce average results. We are here because we want to win the title and none will accept a different result. Coach Art Briles has always been great at having all the organization aligned pushing toward the common goal and I am sure that in Firenze it will be the same”.

Last Sunday you saw the Estra Guelfi U16 team win the National Championship. What is your opinion on the players coached by Coach Guglielmo Perasole?

“The day before I had seen the Rose Bowl and the Final of the Master Tournament. It has been really amazing seeing our young players take the field and I believe some of them will help us out during the incoming championship, they could be a breath of fresh air. In the end the great difference between american players and those from other countries is the moment when we start playing. For instance I’ve started playing when i was 5 or 6. Many of the players who have won the National Championship have been playing American Football already for 3 or 4 years and are really prepared. Athletes like Andrea Costanzi or Cosimo Casati know their stuff and even the QB (Marco Spinelli) showed his arm strenght and knowledge of the game. I can’t wait to be on the field with them.”
